Is the Bullmastiff a guard dog?
It is a dog that naturally tends to protect his pack and his territory. But differently from other dogs he is thoughtful, with a strong common sense both in mind and physique; so he will not react immediately with aggressive behaviour, but prefers to study the situation and to take the most appropriate decision. A good Bullmastiff will not bite the aggressor, but will ground him waiting for his owner to decide what to do. The female is usually more lively and careful. It would be ideal to have a pair of Bullmastiffs, with the male and female sharing the roles. The female takes the first steps and the male concludes the action!
Is a Bullmastiff suitable to have in a family situation?
The Bullmastiff is a pack dog and in this way he behaves in such a way as to protect his pack members be they animals or human. He is inclined to accept the young and put up with them with great patience even if they show disrespect and are a nuisance. It is advisable however to not leave a dog alone with children, in as much as his mass could knock over a child accidentally, even if, when a dog is with children, he will behave more delicately.
Do they slobber?
The dribbling will depend on the lips of the dog. In some breeds this habit is inevitable, as the dogs have a very short muzzle and excessively drooping lips; this problem though is not found in the Bullmastiff.
Can they be left alone in the house?
A Bullmastiff loves to feel part of the family and so to stay with his owner. He can stay alone without causing damage, but obviously not for days on end. His docile and quiet nature, means he does not take his aggression out on the objects around the house. It is important though that he is cuddled and not left too long alone.
How do they behave with other dogs?
Normally if he meets a dog of the same sex, he will not growl or attack the other dog, it is not in his nature. Obviously he is not a cowardly dog, that is to say if he meets a dog that demonstrates aggression towards him, it would be better to move away!
Is it better to have a female of a male?
Males and females have their good points and their defects, which can influence the choice. A male has a more imposing physique; a playful nature and is exuberant but he needs a strong owner who is able to make him understand the commands, much more so than in the female. The female is smaller and has a more affectionate nature; it must not be forgotten the nuisance of the menstrual cycle, and the joy of pregnancies!
What and when should they eat?
A puppy initially should eat four times a day gradually reducing this to twice a day. This can be prepared at home or you can put your trust in the commercially prepared biscuits, which in my opinion are more complete. If you are thinking of preparing the meal yourself, you must remember to integrate this, as meals we eat are not as well balanced as those specially prepared.
What is the ideal climate for a Bullmastiff?
They can tolerate quite well both cold and hot temperatures. Though it is not advisable to leave them outside when the temperature is below zero or in the summer when the temperature goes higher than 30 degrees!
Does he need to be trained?
It is not necessary to have a dog trained, it is enough to have a clear idea of what we expect from our dog. It is important to be consistent, make him understand who is the boss and be decisive in the orders that are given to him.
